10 THINGS WOMEN SHOULD KNOW WHEN BUYING A NEW CAR!

Hey Sassy Peeps!

I don’t know about you guys, but when buying a new car I am always very EMOTIONAL. I feel NERVOUS when the process begins, because as we all know when buying a car, dealers have a reputation for taking advantage of women, especially when they feel that she does not know as much about cars as men. I also feel a sense of EMPOWERMENT once I am APPROVED for a loan, because I am doing it my way with my money! Lastly, I am Super EXCITED to welcome a new member into the family (Chuckles) while driving off the lot.

I have purchased 5 cars in my lifetime and it doesn’t matter what stage I am in my life it is always an emotional roller-coaster.

In my opinion since the entire process can be VERY intimidating, I would suggest strapping on your armor. I don’t mean strap it on a few minutes before heading to the dealer, I mean strap that suit on weeks or even months before signing your name on that dotted line. Wait! Let’s back up a minute. I know every situation is different and sometimes you need a vehicle NOW not LATER, but it’s best to be as prepared as possible.

Credit Score

Knowing your credit score is so important. It’s great to know, because it gives you POWER! Walking in without knowing where you stand as far as credit can really hurt you when negotiating for a lower interest rate. Try getting a free credit report/credit score. FYI…You can get your credit score for FREE at CafeCredit.

Budget

When buying a new car determine your budget before looking at new cars. Otherwise you may come out with a luxe Lincoln when it should have actually been a compact Ford. Remember this is a long-term investment, so you have to be realistic when it comes to budgeting. You do not want to put all your eggs in that basket. You must always leave money in your budget for other things

Pick A Car(s)

Once you have made your budget, pick a few car(s) that you are interested in purchasing that are within your budget. I like to pick two or three just in case.

Read Reviews

Find out what vehicles has the best of what you the consumer want. Me personally, would look for cabin size, sound system, longevity, and cost effective parts not covered by warranty.

Before purchasing the vehicle that I own now, I headed over to the “Latest Car Review” section at Cars.com. This section was a big help! It provided me with detailed information, such as, specs, performance, gas mileage, etc… of the latest vehicles on the market.

Due Diligence

Do your due diligence. You should always know how much the vehicle should cost before negotiating. That way there won’t be any price issues, such as; hidden fees added onto the actual dollar amount.

Ask Your Peeps

Once you have chosen the car of your budgets dreams, the salesperson and where you buy the vehicle is PARAMOUNT. Getting advice from your innercircle is not only IMPORTANT but BRILLIANT. Instead of walking into a showroom and getting a random salesman, consult your peeps: Co-workers, friends, family. In my opinion this is one of the most important steps, because it can definitely make the outcome a successful one.

Stick to your Guns

Don’t let the salesman haggle you. They have a way of making you feel like that car is the only one on earth. WRONG! It’s not! You can always take your business elsewhere! Trust me..they NEED your business, just as bad as you WANT & NEED that car.

Year-End Quotas

If you can hold off until the end of the year to make an auto purchase that would be great. The last week of December is when the dealerships want to close out the year with BIG numbers. They have a lot of pressure to get rid of what is on the lot.

Confidence is Key

Make sure you walk in the dealership like you own the place and like you know what you have to offer. Body language is very important when in negotiating. #PokerFace! Also, if you are new at this or just don’t feel very confident there is nothing wrong with taking BACKUP! Take your brother, uncle, guy friend, boyfriend, husband. That can only be a bonus.

JUST DO IT

Lastly, strap that armor on and be like Nike and JUST DO IT! I have to admit, buying a car is not the easiest thing in the world, but it shouldn’t have to be so frustrating that it ends in a bad deal.  That’s why there are many outlets out there to help you through the process that will help find your stride and feel confident as you drive off the lot.

Buying a new car

Additionally, while on the Cars.com site, I would check out other sections as well. They have tons of informative information that can assist EVERYONE!

Now to my Sassy Peeps! What type of armor to you put on when buying a new car? Inquiring minds want to know!

  2. Awesome post! I have seen so many dealers and their salespeople trying to put one over on women. I guess they still think they can get away with it. Bad move. When women roll up into the dealership with all their info in order, watch out!
