Although services rendered were discounted; all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Hey Sassy Peeps!

Being a digital influencer is not easy. There are a lot of things that come along with this role. As soon as you assume this title, you instantly become writer, location scout, photographer, videographer, tech expert and so much more. Yep, everything I mentioned is totally behind the scenes, but in most cases you are also the model and spokesperson for your brand.

I don’t know about you guys, but for me, working out and maintaining a regular skincare routine aren’t always things that are second nature. If I wasn’t THAT girl…you know the one…the girl who falls asleep in a face full of makeup and love sweets these two things might be a lot easier. #TheStruggleIsReal!

Lately I have been working really hard to lead a healthier lifestyle for a couple of different reasons. One, longevity. I want to remain healthy and stay here on this beautiful place called earth for as long as possible. Two, I am always in front of the camera.

CHEMICAL PEELS

Due to my skin issues, I am constantly on the lookout for new products, healthier lifestyle choicesdifferent skin procedures etc…However, I find it funny that while always on the search for something new, chemical peels never crossed my mind.

Then one day after someone recommended a professional aesthetician, by the name of Jules (ClearlyDerm in Boynton Beach, FL) and being super annoyed with my hyperpigmentation, I decided to schedule an appointment! Can I just say “God thank you for sending me a CHEMICAL PEEL ANGEL!” Jules has not only helped me with my hyperpigmentation, but she also made me reconsider my OVERALL diet. FYI…I have been 95% dairy-free for 34 days, but that’s another post all together. Let’s just say #DairyIsTheDevil! LOL!

Now Sassy Peeps, although the chemical peels definitely WORK and you WILL be extremely pleased with the end result, there are 5 things that you should know before scheduling your first appointment!

Keep reading to learn what they are…

Limited Sun

After a chemical peel (before the skin has finished peeling), it is best to avoid sun exposure. You do not want to cause any further skin damage. Once the skin has stopped peeling, you need to wear sunscreen every day.

Note: To be on the safe side, I would STILL limit the time spent in the sun for one to two weeks after the procedure.

No Skin Picking / Pulling

Don’t be alarmed; peeling is to be expected after chemical peels. For me, peeling usually starts anywhere from 2 to 3 days after the process. I am TOTALLY guilty of this, but it is best not to pick at the peeling skin.  Picking and pulling can cause scarring. Yes, it is really annoying and it looks terrible, but just try to stay away from the mirror and to keep your hands away from your face as much as possible.

Research, Research, Research your Aesthetician

Please do your research when it comes to chemical peels. I know there are tons of over the counter products, but when it comes to a procedure such as this, I would suggest letting a licensed professional administer it. I am a women of color so I have to be especially careful, because it can actually make any hyperpigmentation worse.

Darkening of Skin

It is normal to have some pigment changes after a peel. From what I have been told, peels tend to bring up underlying sun damage. However, just be patience. If the process is done correctly, it will lighten as your skin heals. I have noticed that my skin starts to lighten after a few weeks. I know it is different for everyone; especially women of color. It may take a little longer to see a difference in our pigmentation.

Note: It is best to use a mild cleanser post peel. You want to stay away from harsh acne washes, exfoliants etc… These type of products may cause some additional inflammation, which will result in the darkening of the skin. Additionally, after a chem peel your skin will be very sensitive. So take special care of it and treat it like a baby’s bottom.

Sun Block – #AMust

I don’t care what you have been told in the past, we ALL need to wear sunscreen.

SIDE NOTE to women of color…Women of color, it is ESSENTIAL that we wear sunscreen! For many years I was told I didn’t need sunscreen because of my skin tone! This is sooo NOT true. I personally think if I had worn it, I wouldn’t have as many hyperpigmentation issues.

SO MAKE SURE YOU ARE WEARING SUNSCREEN DAILY, EVEN AFTER THE PEEL, IN ALL TYPES OF WEATHER CONDITIONS. IT DOES NOT MATTER YOUR SKIN TONE/TYPE! TRUST ME, YOU WILL BE HAPPY IN THE LONG RUN!
