If you have a family, you are no stranger to clutter. The arrival of spring, however, is a great reason to do some closet cleaning and put your hoarding days behind. You need to get rid of the old so that you can make space for some chic new must-haves which will make getting dressed in the morning (and getting the kids dressed) a lot easier on everyone.
Making Space – How to Simplify Your Closet
When a woman says that she has nothing to wear, what she usually means is that she has nothing to wear that flatters her shape. When we are younger and still figuring out our “thing”, we tend to buy clothes that first catch our eye, or we fall for the hype of that moment and get something we never end up wearing. As we grow older though, we get to know our bodies better and come to realize that owning a few really great essentials that are flattering, is better than going through all the trends. For starters, look through your closet and try to get rid of anything that you wouldn’t actually wear in front of other people because it doesn’t make you feel good.
The Baby’s Closet
Cleaning out a fast-growing baby’s closet should be easy, right? Wrong. Although a baby doesn’t have much say in what stays and what goes, the parents might have a hard time letting go of some onesies because of the memories they carry. Baby clothes hold even more sentimental value than our own, but we should to learn to let go and donate the ones we no longer need to those who are in need.
Men don’t tend to be big fans of rearranging the closet, so try to go through it on your own and get rid of things you know your partner wouldn’t miss. Sometimes that means accepting that he is never going to wear that beautiful shirt you got him for Christmas three years ago and throwing it away – even if you paid a lot of money for it. If he owns one, you should also get rid of his smelly old gym bag and surprise him with a chic new weekend duffel bag, which will make you happier as well when you are packing for that weekend getaway.
Stocking Up on Must-Haves
If he doesn’t already own one by the time he’s a family man, you need to get your partner a cashmere sweater. Try to invest in a quality, 100%-cashmere sweater that will last him a long time because that is one piece of clothing that’s suitable for almost any occasion, from a casual family outing to the office.
Perhaps it would be easier to make space for new items at home if you saw just how trendy the basics have become. Find a stylish, affordable baby clothing store online, like Old Navy and look through their collection for inspiration. For every new item you wish to buy, get rid of one old one. You don’t need to own everything, but you must have at least one piece of formal wear for your little one for special occasions – be it in the shape of a onesie, a dress or a jumpsuit.
Having great basics will stop you from shopping compulsively, and this is especially true when it comes to your everyday shoes. Classic white sneakers are the best way to go because they truly go with every outfit imaginable; what’s more is that they are affordable on any budget.
Hopefully, some of these tips will inspire you to get on with your spring cleaning and bring some style and freshness to your family.
