While growing up I didn’t know much about the power of credit. I remember when I turned eighteen a co-worker and I were talking, and he informed me that he knew a place in the mall that would let people get jewelry without paying for it. All I had to do was tell them what I liked and sign a document.
Me, being the naive and clueless young girl that I was, got excited and basically told him to lead the way. Well folks, he didn’t lie! I walked in, picked out a 14k herringbone necklace, signed a few documents and walked out. Easy right?!?!?
Wake Up Call
HA, yeah OK! Now let’s fast forward this thing a bit. A few years later, I wanted a new car. I walked into the dealership and they asked “did I have any credit?”. I said, “No!”. They pulled my credit report and guess what was there. That herringbone necklace that I thought I only had to sign! Trust me when I tell you that I was just as surprised as they were. I literally had no idea that I was supposed to pay for that necklace. I tell you I can’t make this up!
The dealer told me that it was still possible for me to get a car. However, they suggested that I pay that debt off, wait a bit and then come back and try again.
Now at the age of 22 I didn’t make much, so I decided to NOT pay the debt and buy a used car for like $1200.00.
You would think I had learned a valuable lesson from that entire incident. That was furthest from the truth. I didn’t get serious about my credit until I was close to thirty.
I remember sitting down with my step-mom so that she could teach me how to create a budget and what I needed to do to stay on track.
Welcome to Good Credit
After that I was very diligent about paying my bills on time, saving money, and paying off past debts. So much so that I got approved for a credit line of $11,000, approved for a new apartment, and the car that I had been obsessing over for months. I definitely felt like I had arrived! Yas girl, yasss!
Falling Off The Wagon
The biggest lesson I have learned throughout my credit journey is that attaining something can be a lot easier than retaining something.
Meaning, I got cocky and although I didn’t go completely back to where I started I was close. Yep, I fell off the wagon and after trying so hard to repair my credit for a second time on my own, I decided to work with Lexington Law Firm for much needed assistance.
